What is the OneLife Suffolk Families and Young People’s Service

Our FREE OneLife Suffolk Family and Young Peoples Service offers 12 months’ worth of support for children and young people from the age of 5 to 18 years, alongside their families, who would like to achieve a healthier lifestyle and maintain a healthier weight.

For the first ten weeks, we invite the whole family to attend the weekly 90-minute sessions (currently delivered via Zoom for COVID safety). These sessions, run by trained practitioners, will show you the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and allow the children to join in with some interactive sessions, physical activity and games. It’s also a great way to make new friends.

OneLife Suffolk offer 3 levels of support – to find out more, click here. We take an approach that focuses more on the importance of healthy lifestyles, where there are no unrealistic expectations.

More information

OneLife KIDS Club (aged 5-11)

The OneLife Suffolk KIDS Club is for the whole family. When your children are between the ages of 5-11, you play an essential role in making sure they live a healthy lifestyle and maintain a healthy weight.

You will join 12 weekly 90-minute group sessions to learn about;

  • Understanding Healthy Eating
  • Sugary Drinks
  • Healthy School Food
  • Reducing Sedentary Behaviour
  • Five-a-day food tasting

The group sessions are designed to educate and guide you to make healthy lifestyle habits normal within your family. And because its the KIDS club, each session includes fun play and activity for the children.

Alongside the 12 group sessions, the programme also includes additional physical activity sessions. You can drop off your children for an hour of physical challenges and fun games, helping get them more active and make new friends.

OneLife Teens (aged 12-16)

This programme puts more onus on the young person taking more responsibility for maintaining a healthy way of life. They will be actively involved in all workshops relating to nutrition, weight management and health, alongside their parents.
Each of the 12 weekly group sessions concentrate on a particular topic, which is tailored for each specific group.

These include:

  • Community Physical Activity Taster Sessions
  • Group Shopping Experience
  • Portion Distortion

This section of the programme also includes a weekly drop-off physical activity session. This will either be held at the same venue as the group session, or at a gym to encourage the use of leisure facilities available to older children.

The benefits of our programme:

We know how much you worry about your child’s health and we understand why you might be worried to ask for help. The OneLife Suffolk Families and Young People’s service will provide you with the support and guidance you are looking for.

  • The most important aim of our clubs is to improve your children’s confidence, find enjoyable ways for them to be more active and to learn about nutrition in a non-judgmental way.
  • Our approach is to implement a balanced diet that is achievable for every family in the long-term, unlike dieting. We provide recipe ideas, cheaper alternatives and practical advice that allows families to achieve the 5 main food groups.
  • We work with you to find strategies that promote a good relationship with food for you and your children. This includes not demonising certain foods or food groups, not describing foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and not using food as a reward or punishment.
  • Our clubs are a safe, non-judgemental environment for your children and young people to share their own thoughts and experiences, allowing them to grow in confidence and body positivity. Our groups are divided into age groups so that young people are supported by other young people their age with similar experiences.
  • We have an excellent clinical and delivery team that continue to develop our programmes to provide the best support to all our families.
